Background: The efficacy of sildenafil (Viagra) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction has been well described. However, the safety of sildenafil has not been established and, thus, it is unknown if it is safe and effective for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In this study, we examined the efficacy of sildenafil (Viagra) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with PAH who have not responded to other medications.
Methods: Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-dose, randomized controlled study of sildenafil (n = 5) and placebo (n = 5) in men with erectile dysfunction.
Results: Mean age was 59.3 ± 4.3 years (range 41 to 84 years), the mean duration of PAH was 7.8 ± 2.6 days (range 1 to 23 days) and mean PAH duration was 2.7 ± 1.3 days (range 2 to 3 days) in sildenafil group and 3.6 ± 1.4 days (range 1 to 5 days) in placebo group, respectively.
Conclusion: Sildenafil is safe and effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients with PAH who have not responded to other medications. Further studies are needed to determine the safety of sildenafil and the efficacy of sildenafil in the treatment of ED.
